Optimal management and data-based predictive control of district heating systems: The Novate Milanese experimental case-study

This document addresses the modeling and optimal control of district heating systems connected to the electrical grid, aiming to maximize operational efficiency by varying the supply temperature based on load demand forecasts and enabling participation in electricity markets.

A new procedure is proposed that allows obtaining hydraulic models of significant points of the network suitable for optimization through a combination of piecewise linear physical models.

 

The proposed methodology was tested on a real district heating plant owned by the energy company A2A S.p.A., demonstrating a reduction in overall gas consumption and operational costs.
