Seasonal Thermochemical Heat Storage (S-TCHS): experimental results in a medium-scale Test Facility and implementation of an innovative separate reactor configuration

The experimental test aims to evaluate the performance of seasonal thermochemical storage technology using 13X zeolite in a fixed-bed reactor and analyzing the effect of air inlet conditions. During the test, it was revealed that about 18% of the material was lost due to damage.

This work is aimed at the experimental analysis of thermochemical seasonal heat storage technology with separate reactors with the integration of a pneumatic pellet handling system. A Test Facility was set up to test the performance of a thermochemical heat storage material, zeolite 13X, in a 1 kg fixed bed reactor.

At a first stage, a preliminary experimental series was carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in combination with the reactive phases of the process. The air inlet conditions (air humidity ratio and mass flow rate) were varied to investigate their effects on the performance indicators, especially the released thermal power.

Finally, the sorbent handling system was tested with subsequent cycles to evaluate the damage that the material would withstand; at the end of a 15 cycles test, about 18% of the material was lost due to pulverization and fragmentation.
