System Research for new flexibility resources: the role of hybrid hydropower pumping

The article presents RSE’s activities, financed by the System Research fund for the three-year period 2019-2021, which led to the development of a hybrid model of the Foxi Murdegu marine pumped power plant (Sardinia) to study its dynamic behavior.

The hybrid plants obtained by combining hydropower pumping with electrochemical Energy Storage Systems (ESS, or SdA), flywheels and appropriate control logics for the provision of flexibility services are among the most promising devices with a view to increasing system capacity to accommodate generation from non-programmable renewable sources (NPRS, or FRNPs). At the same time, to make these innovative solutions economically feasible and achievable, the article analyzed the essential market developments in terms of dispatching services.
