The innovative FlexPlan methodology to reap the benefits of including storage and load flexibility in grid planning: methodology and regional study cases

This document first analyzes which aspects of the current established network planning methodologies applied by the System Operators are becoming critical, and then describes the key aspects of the new network planning methodology proposed by the FlexPlan project aimed at overcoming these challenges.

Subsequently, the document provides details on the reference scenarios adopted by FlexPlan for the three grid years (2030, 2040, and 2050) and presents initial results from the simulations conducted for each of the 6 regional cases. Finally, the document draws some conclusions from these studies regarding the role that flexibility will play in Europe in the medium to long term, and the benefits that can be derived from considering it in the planning process of transmission and distribution networks.
