The Smart Grid Semantic Platform: Synergy between IEC Common Information Model (CIM) and Big Data

The article describes, in the context of Smart Grids, the importance of integrating semantic solutions with Big Data analytics solutions. In particular, emphasis is placed on the synergy between the IEC CIM 61968 standard and the management of information from Big Data platforms.

Recent breakthroughs in computing, Cloud Computing, Big Data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are making possible technological solutions that were unthinkable until a few years ago, or usually only available to large IT companies. The ‘Smart Grid Semantic Platform’ (SGSP) demonstrator was developed by RSE using these new technologies by integrating different aspects of managing a medium-voltage electric distribution grid. The services developed in the platform include the visualization of topological, geographic and electrical asset data as well as Big Data analytics of historical data. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the synergy between the standard semantic models for power grids (IEC CIM 61968) and the Big Data platform capable of analyzing data from time series representing the electrical load of medium-voltage substations. The calculation of a power line load index is considered as an application case.
