Using GIS to assess the impact of electric vehicles on electrical distribution networks: A study applied to the city of Brescia

This document shows the future impact of electromobility on the distribution network, managed by Unareti, serving the city of Brescia.

Local environmental concerns and the need to replace fossil fuels with renewable sources, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, are driving the diffusion of new electrical technologies, such as electric heating/cooling systems, residential photovoltaic generators and electric mobility. These new users will mostly be connected to distribution networks, operated by distribution system operators (DSOs). To determine the impact of these resources, it is important to define realistic future scenarios. To this end, detailed knowledge of the network (structure, characteristics, etc.) and connected users is useful. This paper shows how the integration of network data with external public databases enables a detailed study of the future impact of electromobility. The method is applied to a real distribution network, managed by Unareti, which serves the city of Brescia in Northern Italy.
