Integrated assessment of geological hazards for the Italian electro-energy system: detailed seismic and geological analyzes on a pilot case

The report presents the results of the analysis aimed at assessing the seismic and landslide hazard potentially capable of compromising the functionality of the Italian electro-energetic system. A ground shaking caused by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake (Mw 6,9) it has been simulated numerically, an updating of the LOGIT methodology to obtain landslide susceptibility maps it has been carried out and, it has been computed the landslide susceptibility for the transmission towers located in the Campania region. Finally, the last part of the work is devoted to the reference analysis concerning the vulnerability of the wind-turbines.

Knowledge of the seismic and geological forcings to which the elements of the electro-energy system may be subjected is essential to guarantee its safe functioning, identify the risks and propose improvement solutions. For this reason, in the present 3-year period of Research of System, an important activity concerns the evaluation of the seismic and landslide hazard. In the 2022, the research activity allowed to choose the Irpinia area, inside the Campania region, like pilot case and to introduce the suitable methods and codes to study those hazards.

In the 2023, concerning the study of the seismic forcings, a 3D heterogeneous seismic wave propagation model of the Irpinia region has been developed. The numerical model has been verified by independent numerical simulations and validated by seismic recordings.

Despite some simplifications carried out in this first step of the work, the numerical results show a realistic seismic wave propagation model, for example underlined by the directivity feature of the seismic source in the North and North-West direction in according to the observations of the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.

Concerning the landslide hazard, it has been carried out an updating of the LOGIT methodology to obtain susceptibility maps and simultaneously, by using a method based on the detailed geological and geomorphological features of the area, it has been computed the susceptibility to landslide for the transmission towers located in the Campania region.

Finally, the last part of the work is devoted to the reference analysis concerning the vulnerability of the wind-turbines.
