This report summarises the development of the European initiatives and activities on Smart Energy Systems carried out in 2023, in the light of the path of European energy policy, in particular starting from 2019, from the “European Green Deal” to the recent “Net-Zero Industry Act”.
The discussion goes into detail in cases where the present project has directly contributed to the activities.

The main objectives of this multi-year activity are the coordination and alignment of national research and innovation (R&I) activities with those of global scope, as fostered by the national energy strategy and the integrated energy and climate plan, through participation in the main initiatives and strategic steering tables at different levels (national, European, and international) and constant updates on innovation activities in different countries. The latter work also intends to provide ideas for future research at the national level, reporting and analysing the results and trends of other countries.

After contributing to the activities of the Technology and Innovation Platform on Smart Networks for Energy Transition “ETIP SNET”, which this year published the R&I Roadmap updated to 2025-2031 and the Implementation Plan 2025-2028, RSE now collaborates with the platform also thanks to its role in other strategic initiatives, i.e., the coordination of the Implementation Working Group 4 on “Energy Systems” of the SET Plan and of the National Stakeholder Coordination Group (a forum of government representatives) as well as the responsibility for the “Transition Initiative” on the integrated energy system in the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), which has become a funding program of transnational projects with strong impact under the Horizon Europe programme.
