projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2022-2024)

Sustainable Mobility and Interaction with the Energy System

The goal of this project is to research and find technological solutions that will facilitate a faster and more effective transition of the transportation system towards greater sustainability, according to very ambitious national and international targets.

The project ‘Sustainable Mobility and Interaction with the Energy System’ addresses some of the main points arising in the transition of the national transportation system towards greater sustainability.

The activities aim to identify the most sustainable forms of passenger and freight mobility through integrated and precise modeling of different technological options and assessment of the transport, energy and environmental effects of their introduction.

The environmental analyses are conducted using both Life Cycle Assessment and air quality models. The possibility of reproducing through modeling tools the current situation of the national transportation system and a set of future scenarios resulting from the adoption of different policies is an extremely valuable tool for decision makers, who will thus be able to guide the sector transition toward the most effective solutions.

The project also addresses some technological aspects regarding the electrification of mobility and its interaction with the grid. In particular, it proposes solutions and strategies that represent an evolution from the state of the art, with a specific focus on dynamic charging control solutions and the use of electric vehicles as a flexibility resource for the electric system. TIt also addresses the innovative topic of integrating photovoltaics on vehicle roofs. Finally, activities include analyses and studies to assess the potential conversion to electric of forms of transport other than cars, including heavy transport and marine transport.
