RESEARCH GROUP MISSION

Developing and applying methodologies and tools for planning and operating transmission grids, in the context of the liberalized market and in the presence of significant penetration of
non-programmable renewable energy sources (NP RES), according to the smart transmission grid approach.

ACTIVITY FIELDS

  • Methodologies and tools for transmission network planning in the context of electricity market liberalization, including to support the definition of efficient regulatory approaches (e.g. cost-benefit analysis)
  • Studies on grid expansion, including interconnections with neighboring countries
  • Analysis of the impact of new technologies (HVDC, FACTS, WAMS/WACS, etc.) on planning and safe operation of the electricity system
  • Technical and economic evaluations of conventional and innovative ancillary services (reserve, inertia, voltage and restoration support etc.) provided by NP RES, storage systems and other resources
  • Methodologies and tools for probabilistic assessment of electricity system operation risk considering uncertainties also related to NP RES
  • Methodologies and tools for assessing and increasing resilience in the planning, scheduling, and operation phases of the electricity system
