Cloud-Base Height Estimation Based on CNN and All Sky Images

The study is dedicated to estimating cloud base height, a fundamental element in determining solar radiation availability, using a convolutional neural network applied to images from an All Sky Imager..

Among various meteorological parameters, cloud base height is employed in many applications to provide real-time operational information to aviation, to initialize numerical weather prediction models, and to validate them. Additionally, cloud base height is useful for short-term solar radiation forecasting.

Since cloud movements primarily affect solar irradiance availability, their characterization is crucial for solar energy applications; accurate estimation of ground shading requires knowledge of cloud height and extent. In this study, cloud base height is estimated from sky images captured by a single All Sky Imager. To accomplish this task, a convolutional neural network model is selected and developed.
