Superconducting cables for sustainable energy transition–SCARLET

SCARLET aims to develop superconducting direct current cables for the transportation of electricity from renewable generation sites both onshore and offshore.

The start of the project is not yet confirmed, but it could reasonably be positioned in September 2022 and the expected duration is 54 months.

The superconducting materials considered will be essentially two: high temperature superconductors (HTS) operating in liquid nitrogen (LN2) at 67 K and magnesium diboride (MgB2) operating in liquid hydrogen (LH2) at 20 K. In addition to the cables themselves, their cooling systems and cable protection components will be developed, including a high current superconducting fault current limiting module (SFCL). SCARLET also includes a feasibility study regarding elpipes, large section metal pipes proposed for the transmission of high-power electrical energy at room temperature.

SCARLET brings together the main European industrial players developing superconducting cables, including Nexans (France / Germany) for HTS cables, ASG (Italy) for MgB2 cables and SuperNode (Ireland) for offshore cables. The main industrial players are supported by specialized companies that complete the consortium with different key competences for the project: Sintef (Norway – Project coordinator), IASS (Germany), WavEC (Portugal), IEE (Slovakia), UniBO (Italy), Absolut (France), ESPCI (France), SGI (France), RSE (Italy), Rina-C (Italy), VESC (Germany).

RSE will be directly involved in Work Package 5 coordinated by Supergrid, for the development of a SFCL device in DC 50 kV / 10kA, whose a module with expected voltage between 3 kV and 6 kV will be tested.
