A study of innovative ICT infrastructure for resilient energy networks

The ongoing digitization of energy infrastructure requires the development of analysis tools and technology platforms that enable the application of self-restoring measures for ICT services while meeting the requirements of the energy operating environment. The paper describes tools for monitoring ICT infrastructures to assess possible performance degradation and implement automatic reconfiguration solutions to ensure service continuity.

The evolution of the energy infrastructure toward its progressive digitization requires the development of analysis tools and technology platforms that enable the application of self-healing measures, while meeting the requirements of the energy operating environment.

Evaluating the impact of ICT disruptions on energy systems is, in fact, a critical issue for operators, which can be addressed through testing on experimental platforms that can reproduce the behavior of real infrastructure.

It is important to develop innovative solutions based on emerging architectures, such as Cloud/Fog/Edge/IoT to increase infrastructure resilience through real-time recognition of malfunctioning conditions and triggering automatic reconfigurations of ICT architecture. There is also a need to further investigate the application of process orchestration techniques, evaluating hierarchical architectures involving Cloud, Fog and Edge.

The paper delves into the topic of resilience, declining it for those aspects that affect the service availability of ICT infrastructure, and highlights solutions to ensure it. Through some experimental use cases, the tools for monitoring the ICT infrastructure are described in order to assess possible performance degradation and implement automatic reconfiguration solutions.

In addition, the topic of quantum communications is addressed in order to initiate an evaluation of the application potential and the criticalities of using this technology in the energy sector.
