Focus on MACSE in the new issue of RSE ‘APE – Appunti di Energia’

The eighth issue edited by the Energy Systems Development Department is dedicated to the Electricity Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism (MACSE).

A new issue of ‘APE – Appunti di Energia’, by RSE, was released. This month Nathan Giovannini of the ‘Energy Market Regulation’ Research Group analyzes the new market mechanism for electric storage in Italy, MACSE [Electricity Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism].

Within the framework of the energy transition, in order to reach the goals set for 2050, the emphasis is on the expansion of renewable sources, most of which are not programmable. Consequently, it is crucial that the energy system has flexibility resources. In particular, solar photovoltaic energy presents issues for the future: it is characterized by strong daily cyclicality and is expected to have an unbalanced development in Italy, with most installations concentrated in the south. For this reason, storage systems play a critically important role.

Currently, these systems participate in the energy market either through arbitrage or by providing ancillary services. However, market risks, long-term uncertainty and high investment costs may discourage potential investors and make project financing more difficult, thus slowing down their development.

MACSE aims to solve these problems through an innovative long-term remuneration mechanism for storage systems.
