Public-use charging infrastructure in Italy: where do we stand?

In 2023, there was an increase of more than 55 percent in new installations compared to the previous year: RSE analysis on the evolution of distribution on the territory.

Installations of new charging points for public use in Italy are on the rise. Through the data provided by Motus-E it is possible to monitor the evolution of the spread of public charging infrastructure, not only in terms of numbers, but also in terms of territorial coverage. This provides a clear and up-to-date view of the development of recharging networks throughout the country.

As part of the 2022-2024 Three-Year System Research Plan and a collaboration agreement with Motus-E, RSE continued its analysis of the evolution of the distribution of public-use recharging points in Italy. This analysis took into account significant variables of the territory, with the aim of providing useful elements to identify possible strategies for the development of charging infrastructure.

In 2023 there was an increase of more than 55 percent in new installations compared to the previous year. This increase is also reflected in the territorial distribution, with more than 91 percent of the Italian territory now having at least one charging point within a radius of 10 km, up from 86% in 2022.

Interactive maps depicting the spread of charging points in Italy are published on the Geoportale Energia e Territorio [Energy and Territory Geoportal] and can be viewed here.

These data testify to the rapid development of the charging infrastructure in Italy, an important step toward more sustainable and accessible mobility for all.
