RSE attended the meeting of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors

The meeting was attended by CEO Franco Cotana and the Director of the Generation and Materials Technology Department Luigi Mazzocchi.

The European Commission is allying with key stakeholders in the nuclear energy field with the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

SMRs are a new generation of nuclear fission power plants featuring small to medium power (typically a few hundred MW), construction modularity, further improved safety compared to the most recent nuclear power plants and, for some of them, very low production of long-lived radioactive waste.

This Alliance intends to promote the development of SMRs by creating a framework for dialogue and collaboration among all interested entities (public authorities, nuclear industry, universities and research, associations, NGOs), selecting the projects of greatest interest, and establishing Technical Working Groups (TWGs) to discuss main cross-cutting issues (industrial applications, technology and research, safety, fuel cycle, financial aspects, etc.).

On May 29 and 30, the first meeting of the Alliance was attended by hundreds of experts from all EU countries, including a rather large and comprehensive group of Italian representatives, led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security. RSE CEO Franco Cotana and Director of the Generation Technologies and Materials Department Luigi Mazzocchi attended the meeting.

RSE will participate in the activities of two Working Groups, TWG2 (Technologies and Research/Development/Innovation) and TWG6 (Nuclear Safety and Safeguards)
