LCA of the current and future Italian energy mixes

Electricity mix significantly affects LCA results, it is of utmost importance to have updated and detailed datasets for your study. In this website you can find datasets of four historical mixes (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022) and an electricity mix for 2030 and for 2040. The datasets are available in .csv format.

DESCRIPTION

These datasets represent the Life Cycle Inventory of the Italian gross electricity consumption mix. The gross electricity consumption mix represents the electricity generation excluding electricity produced from pumped hydro, plus the electricity import, minus the export. Grid and conversion losses to MV and LV are excluded. electricity consumption for auxiliary services are not included. The allocation methos is the Cut-off method (thus electricity from waste incineration is burden free). There are five historical mixes, one representing the gross electricity consumption mix in 2018, one in 2019, one in 2020, one in 2021 and one in 2022. There is one dataset representing the electricity mix in 2030 and one in 2040, according to the latest version of the PNIEC (integrated NAtional Energy and Climate Plan) (june 2024). For the background activity the Ecoinvent database version 3.3 has been used for mix 2018, for mixes 2019, 2020 and 2021 Ecoinvent version 3.8 has been used, while for mixes 2022, 2030 e 2040 Ecoinvent version 3.9.1 has been used.

APPLICATIONS

The datasets are in .csv format and can be imported in the most common LCA softwares to serve in project where an updated and detailed italian electricity mix is required. For prospective LCA use (i.e. the LCA of emerging technolgoies) and LCA studies in the medium term the electricity mix at 2030 ad at 2040 are available. The availiability of three historical mixes allows also to evaluate the evolution of the italian electricity system.

USERS

The datasets are available for researchers, universities, consultancies and LCA practictioners who need un updated electricity mix for their LCA studies or future mixes for prospective LCAs.

Elements For The Integration Of LCA Of Energy Scenarios With Energy Modeling And The Monetary Evaluation Of Externalities

The work presented in the deliverable consists of two parts: Life Cycle Assessment analysis of the current Italian electricity mix (year 2019) and its future scenarios for 2030 (PNIEC and Green Deal); Evaluation of the environmental externalities of the aforementioned mixes. The link between decarbonization and resource consumption is confirmed and evident in the evolution of the mix as predicted by the PNIEC and Green Deal scenarios. The decarbonization of the mix also significantly reduces the amount of environmental externalities per kWh in Italy.

International comparison: Life Cycle Assessment of national and European electricity production

The report describes the Life Cycle Assessment of the current (2018) and 2030 electricity mix of the main member states of the European Union (Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark and Finland), to be compared with the results obtained for Italy. As far as 2030 electricity mix is concerned, scenarios identified by the European reference scenario 2016 were considered and the PNIEC (Italian Integrated Energy and Climate Plan) scenario was also taken into account for Italy.

LCA of Italian electric kWh: 2023 update

The electrical sector is crucial in the energy transition and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis provides a clear perspective about the environmental impacts of the decarbonization strategies. In this report the photovoltaic modeling of the electrical mix has been refined, and future scenarios have been updated (PNIEC 2.0) and compared with the current situation (mix 2021). The use of primary data has improved the accuracy of the dataset, reducing impacts in the photovoltaic sector by 40%.

LCA and externalities of kWh in Italy: 2020 and future scenarios

This report presents updated and improved environmental impact estimates according to the life cycle methodology of the current Italian electricity mix and 2030 scenarios. The environmental impact estimates are supplemented with the environmental externalities assessment that confirmed the contribution of climate-changing emissions to the environmental cost of electricity production: the external cost of electricity production increases from 0.0421€2020 in 2020 to 0.0175€2020 in 2030.
