Scenarios and tools for electric mobility and its integration and interaction with the electric system

The project ‘Scenarios and Tools for Electric Mobility and its Integration and Interaction with the Electric System’ aims to capitalise on RSE’s expertise and develop new tools to provide policy makers with reliable and timely indications on the potential/criticalities of the development of electric and sustainable mobility in Italy and point operators to solutions and strategies that facilitate the penetration of the electric carrier in transport.

The project revolves around the complex relation between the world of transport and the electro-energy sector and includes two Work Packages, namely ‘Scenarios and Tools for Electric Mobility’ and ‘Electric Mobility and its Integration and Interaction with the Electric System’. The first WP encompasses the main environmental and transport modeling activities, as well as analysis of the potential electrification of transport not addressed in previous research periods.

Two of WP1 macro-goals can be summarised as follows:

• Supporting policy decisions through integrated modelling tools and tools to quantify the effects of the evolution of the transport sector.

• Assessing the potential and impact of the transition to electric mobility, beyond private cars. Beginning with the analysis of the state of the art from both a transport and a technological point of view, the aim is to assess deployment scenarios, infrastructure needs and impacts of the electrification of public transport, freight, micromobility and maritime transport sectors, while also maintaining some attention to the evolution of private vehicles.

WP2 focuses on the most promising solutions for proper interaction between electric vehicles and the electro-energy system, with a macro-goal that can be summarized as follows:

• Making electric vehicles move from being a risk for the electric grid to being an opportunity for it.

Within the two WPs and the macro-goals summarised above, the project will also include significant activities in terms of support to institutions, participation in national and international working groups, dissemination and interaction with industry stakeholders.
