projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2015-2017/2018)

Direct current transmission and distribution

The project, now in its final phase, aims to the complete achievement of the goal of fostering the introduction of direct current portions within the alternate current distribution and transmission grids and enable greater exploitation of HVDC connections for the safe operation of the power system even with greater penetration of renewable sources.

The project aims to synthesize the results obtained in terms of:

  • study activities on direct current interruption and development and realisation of a one-way hybrid switch prototype.
  • simulations of digital grid control systems, bot traditional and Real Time Control Hardware in The Loop (RT CHIL),
  • experimentation with HVDC overhead power line components
  • field testing, in the DC microgrid available at RSE, of low voltage hybrid AC/DC distribution grids.
  • analysis of technical/economic benefits offered by rehabilitation of the HVDC SA.CO.I connection in order to achieve the goals of the National Energy Strategy (NES).
