The electricity bill and its main components

The article reports the update to 2020 of the national electricity bill in terms of the main components of the final price of the energy consumed. The intent is to describe the possible impact on domestic customers of the end of the ‘Maggior Tutela’ service from January 1, 2023.

The article analyzes the national electricity bill and its main cost components: energy, dispatching services, network services, general charges and taxes. In 2020, the overall expenditure can be estimated at approximately EUR 46.1 billion (down nearly 14% compared to 2019), divided into: energy plus dispatching services (39.1%), general charges (27.1% ), taxes (18.8%) and network services (15%). This corresponds to an estimated unit cost of 16.25 euro cents for each kWh withdrawn. In light of the current sales price differentials for free-market customers and protected-category customers and the hypotheses of alignment of protected-category prices with those of the free market, the elimination of the protected-category ‘Maggior Tutela’ scheme foreseen from January 1, 2023 suggests a probable increase in expenditure for domestic users.
