LCA of different construction configurations for a flat photovoltaic system with heterojunction modules

This work presents the results of the LCA analysis relating to a hypothetical plant with a power of 85 MW equipped with bifacial heterojunction modules; specifically, three possible configurations of the system are analyzed: i) with the modules mounted on a mono-axial tracker; ii) with the modules installed on a fixed structure; iii) an agrivoltaic system in which electricity production is combined with agricultural cultivation.

The evaluation of the potential environmental impact of the different photovoltaic generation technologies, and the comparison between them, is of primary importance for the energy sector which aims to be sustainable from an environmental as well as economic point of view. This work presents the results of the LCA of a hypothetical plant with a power of 85 MW equipped with bifacial heterojunction modules; specifically, three possible configurations of the system are analyzed:

i) with the modules mounted on a single-axis tracker;

ii) with the modules installed on a fixed structure;

iii) an agrivoltaic system in which electricity production is combined with agricultural cultivation. To evaluate the influence of incident solar radiation on the results of the LCA study, two possible sites in which to build the plant are considered, Piacenza and Catania. The aim is therefore to compare the different configurations from an environmental point of view and identify, if it exists, the optimal solution.
