LCA of photovoltaic solutions in Italy

This study discusses the main environmental impacts of different photovoltaic technologies in Italy.

By solution, we mean the combination of technology (CdTe, monocrystalline or multicrystalline silicon, etc.) and installation option (roof, ground, etc.). The environmental impacts are analyzed by Life Cycle Assessment according to the ISO 14040 standard. The life cycle environmental impacts of the different solutions are also compared with the impacts of a natural gas combined cycle plant which, in Italy, is the main technology replaced by new photovoltaic installations. The results show that there is no photovoltaic solution that is the best for all impact categories. All solutions have different environmental advantages over fossil technologies, including over the natural gas combined cycle. The main negative effect is significant land use for ground-mounted installations, which account for almost 40 percent of installed PV capacity in Italy. In addition, impacts related to human toxicity should be noted: all photovoltaic solutions, in the case of human toxicity-non-carcinogenic effects, and five out of eleven, in the case of human toxicity-carcinogenic effects show higher impacts than the natural gas combined cycle.
