The impact of Energy Communities on the Italian distribution systems

This research aims to analyze the Renewable Energy Communities scheme arising from the Italian implementation of EU regulations and its impact on electrical distribution systems. The study, conducted using national statistics, shows that Renewable Energy Communities can contribute to achieving 63% of the 2030 target for renewable energy installations.

A decade after the Climate-Energy package 20-20-20, many challenges remain in achieving the decarbonization of the electricity sector. The European Union has set very ambitious targets for 2030, forecasting an even greater spread of renewable resources. To this end, active citizen participation in electricity production and sale mechanisms has been identified as a key factor in achieving these goals. Therefore, the RED-II and IEM directives have introduced new actors, allowing citizens to become active participants in the power system by producing, storing, and selling self-generated renewable energy.
