An innovative short-term congestion management algorithm for the Italian subtransmission grid: the Zonal-EMS Demo of the OSMOSE Project

This article describes the architecture of the zonal management system developed within the H2020 OSMOSE project and the initial results obtained from the experimentation.

Electric grids are undergoing substantial transformations, primarily related to the massive penetration of renewable generation units. As a result, transmission network operators are exploring innovative solutions to leverage the new sources of flexibility provided by these new installations in the system. In this context, the OSMOSE project, funded by the European Commission, aims to develop and field-test a new zonal EMS (Energy Management System) that coordinates all these new flexibility resources to address congestion in the transmission and sub-transmission network, which will be tested in a section of the network in Southern Italy. This article describes the architecture of the zonal management system and the initial results obtained from the experimentation.
