Summary for the year 2023 of international activities about the flexibility of integrated energy systems

Research on flexibility management and integrated energy system needs coordination at the European and international levels, for all countries to bring innovation activities forward in a holistic way, preventing overlaps, sharing knowledge and results and maximizing impact.
This Report focuses on RSE activities in two important European coordination initiatives, CETPartnership and National Stakeholder Coordination Group.

This report summarizes RSE’s work on European activities regarding flexibility and integrated energy system in 2023.

EU policies keep together the reaction to the challenges of the last years (pandemics and the Russian invasion of Ukraine) and the efforts for the transition, from Next Generation EU to REPowerEU, including the recent Green Deal Industrial Plan.

It is even more important to coordinate European R&I activities in the field of energy transition, to ensure that all countries bring their work forward in an aligned way, preventing overlaps, sharing knowledge and results and fostering impact along the SET Plan 10 Actions. Also the SET Plan was revised during 2023, to include the acceleration toward decarbonization.

The alignment of European R&I activities is the main objective of the work summarized here.

RSE takes part in different strategic initiatives in the SET Plan framework. This Report focuses on the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership) and the National Stakeholder Coordination Group (NSCG) activities. CETPartnership is linked to Horizon Europe project and funds projects on developing and demonstrating enabling technologies for the energy transition, pooling different European Funding Partners’ contributions for common targets.

RSE coordinates the Transition Initiative about the integrated energy system and contributed to the preparation of two Call Modules, both in 2022 and 2023, focusing, during the last year, on direct current and energy system.

RSE worked with the Green Powered Future Mission of Mission Innovation, leveraging the firm role in both initiatives, fostering a long-term synergy.
NSCG is a space for discussion on research national priorities, with the aim of leveraging local aspects and the relationships with regulators, society and the macro-sector linked with innovation support. Together with its partners, RSE organized a series of events on local flexibility needs and on the role of energy communities.

Active participation in the most important European initiatives, and similar ones at international level, allows RSE to access the fora for Roadmap and Implementation Plan elaborations and strengthens RSE’s position as research and roadmapping institution.
