Towards the on-line diagnostics of cable joints

Cable joints are one of the most critical parts of power distribution systems as they influence to a great extent the reliability of the power network. In this work, we introduce a diagnostic system that, through the measurement of partial discharges (PDs), can help to predict their aging. The system can identify whether a signal has been triggered by a PD source inside or outside the joint.

 

In the former case, it is possible to localize the PDs source (possibly a Treeing) with sub-millimetre precision and to trace its evolution over time. The algorithm also provides, for each PD event, an evaluation of the real discharge intensity. In this work, we briefly introduce this novel technique and test its performances in a technically relevant case.
