Study of surge protection in MVDC networks using a solid-state breaker/limiter

The paper analyses the criticality of transient voltage variations caused by the interaction between a multi terminal MVDC network and solid state breaker/limiter devices facing fault events. The study, using also real time simulations, discusses the possibility of limiting voltage surges by appropriately exploiting the electrical components which constitute the solid state breaker/limiter, avoiding the installation of additional surge arresters in the distribution network.

Research on meshed MVDC networks has increased recently, to overcome the limitations of traditional radial MVAC distribution networks.

This distribution network paradigm introduces new technological challenges, one of the most significant being the protection against fault events. DC fault currents must be properly handled and limited to protect equipment from damage. Fast and efficient solid state MVDC breaker devices with current limiting capabilities become then necessary.

In some cases, the very fast switching of such device could result in excessive stress for the whole insulation level of the network and in a threat for the proper operation of every connected device.

This work presents the development of a solid-state breaker/limiter device with embedded surge damper; simulations about its capability to contain switching overvoltages have been developed. Relevant results are shown and discussed, as a significant reduction in the peak overvoltage values has been achieved.
