Real-time simulation and sensitivity analysis about the effect of a Solid-State Circuit Breaker with current limiter and active damping on MVDC grid inductance

The paper analyses the impact of solid-state circuit breakers on MVDC grid. Besides a good behavior in limiting overcurrent and damping surges, a low impact on grid parameters is desired. Sensitivity analysis tests are performed by means of software simulations, then validated in real-time environment.

This work presents a study about SSCB (solid state circuit breaker) performances into a multiterminal MVDC grid. After a brief theoretical analysis of the breaking phase for the developed SSCB, the interaction between multiple SSCBs operating in the same network at the same time is assessed by means of software simulations.

Extra SSCBs displacement does not affect the value of grid inductance during the breaking phase; current zeroing times are almost constant. In all cases, simulations values are close to theoretical ones, proving the correct implementation of the device mathematical model.

After software simulations, achieved results are validated through real-time tests, thus proving once again the correct implementation of the model on another development platform.

All the process is intended as a sensitivity analysis about the impact of the developed SSCB device on a generic MVDC grid.
