Protecting Operators During Firefighting Operations Near Overhead Transmission Lines

The paper addresses the procedures adopted in Italy to limit the combined risks for the system, the firemen and the public in presence of wildfires close to transmission lines.

Wildfire events developing close to transmission lines expose the firefighters, the environment, and the power system to heavy stresses. Firemen must deal with complex situations in terms of limiting and reducing the extent and the impact of the fire, setting up the most adequate strategy to combat such a difficult enemy.

Transmission lines constitute for them an additional workload because specific precautions must be taken to master a new risk on top of the flames and smoke: i.e. the electrical risk leading to electrocution. The paper addresses the procedures adopted in Italy to limit the combined risks for the system, the firemen and the public in presence of wildfires close to transmission lines.

Several open points are still to be addressed and require research activities, with special reference to the behavior of the conductor-to-ground gap in presence of close-by fires and during firefighting operations.
