Indications of the contents and structure of a database for geological analyses

In order to integrate the activities that RSE is carrying out on the hydrogen geological storage, after having analyzed all the data, information and tools available in RSE, the development of a new database has been prepared. This database containing the information of interest to perform geological-modeling studies applied to the energy system and therefore also useful for the hydrogen geological storage.

As part of the research that RSE is carrying out on the hydrogen geological storage, there is a specific activity on the development of a new database containing information and data useful for supporting research applied to the energy system and therefore also usable within the H2 underground storage.

As regards the activities carried out, the data contained in the two geological databases currently used in RSE were firstly analysed. These two databases are: the one relating to wells drilled in Italy for the research and cultivation of hydrocarbons and the one relating to the wells geothermal perforated in the national territory. Further data analyzed are those available in the GeoWebGIS which is webgis containing a multitude of information and themes collected and/or elaborated over the years as a result of the activities that RSE has carried out, starting from 2006, in the context of System Research (relating to various types of topics, e.g. oil&gas, geothermal energy, natural gas storage, CO2 storage).

Although there is the possibility of continuing to implement this tool, following careful analysis, we deemed it more appropriate to develop a new database using PostgreSQL software. It is a powerful and reliable open-source object-relational database system that uses and extends the SQL combined language with many features.

The development of a new database, easier to consult, will allow the information currently present in the RSE applications to be collected in a single tool. The data currently available will be updated and implemented before being inserted into the new database. The new database, in addition to allowing the viewing, querying and superimposition of a multitude of data, will be interfaceable with other databases created and available in RSE for other purposes. This aspect represents an important strong point as it will allow easy access to additional information (e.g. basic themes).

In this document, therefore, a first indication of the contents with which the new database is expected to be implemented and how these will be structured has been provided. In the continuation of the activities, the development of the structure will be completed, and the population of the database will proceed, also in the light of the results obtained during the current research on the hydrogen geological storage.
