RSE in Dublin for the 30th ISGAN Executive Committee Meeting

The Director of RSE’s TGM Department, Luciano Martini, took part in the meeting to discuss global cooperation activities for the development of smarter, cleaner and more flexible electricity grids.

The 30th ISGAN Executive Committee Meeting has successfully concluded in Dublin, bringing together 39 delegates representing 18 countries and the European Commission to review progress across all ISGAN activities supporting global cooperation for the development of smarter, cleaner, and more flexible electricity grids.

Hosted by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the three-day event featured an intensive program alternating technical and institutional work sessions, deep dives into grid interoperability and flexibility, contributions from international experts, and presentations focused on tangible results and upcoming objectives.

The opening session included welcome remarks and keynote speeches from William Walsh, CEO of SEAI; Declan Meally, Director of Business, Public Sector and Transport at SEAI; Pat Eccles, Senior Manager at ESB Networks; and Ruth Buggie, Head of Mobility and Smart Networks at SEAI. Luciano Martini, Director of the Generation Technologies and Materials Department at RSE, attended as ISGAN Chair and the Italian delegate to the Executive Committee, supporting the discussions and co-chairing sessions with the Vice-Chairs to advance international cooperation on smart grids.

Throughout the three days, participants engaged in technical workshops, country delegate interventions, sessions dedicated to updates on ongoing ISGAN Working Group projects, and roundtables on operational priorities, governance, and funding. Additional activities included discussions on new synergies between working groups, review of communication strategies and Lighthouse Project developments, and a strong focus on the central role of digitalisation, flexibility, interoperability, and resilience as key enablers of the clean energy transition.

The ExCo meeting was preceded by a workshop on “Advancing Interoperability in a Fragmented Energy System” led by Working Group 5. At the conclusion of the three-day event, attendees visited the ESB Renewables Operations Control Centre to explore Ireland’s electricity system management, distinguished by substantial integration of wind power. The meeting wrapped up with the workshop “Changing Structural Conditions: Activating Flexibilities through Price Signals” led by Working Groups 7 and 9.

These in-person ExCo meetings provide a vital opportunity to strengthen collaboration among ISGAN member countries, facilitating direct dialogue, exchange of experiences, and building a shared vision of ISGAN’s objectives and activities in support of the global energy transition.

Special thanks go to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) for their warm hospitality and excellent event organization, and to the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and ESB Networks for hosting workshops and supporting the successful execution of the meeting.

The next ISGAN Executive Committee Meeting (ExCo31) will be held in Rome, in March 2026 – a key opportunity for participating countries to align on common goals and showcase Italian best practice projects aimed at promoting intelligent, resilient, and sustainable electricity grids worldwide.
