Greenhouse gas emissions in urban environments: a new study is now online

Giulia Zazzeri, researcher at RSE Sustainable Development and Energy Sources Department, contributed to the study.

GAW Report No. 314, entitled “Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System: Urban Emission Observation and Monitoring Good Research Practice Guidelines” is now online. Giulia Zazzeri, researcher at RSE’s Sustainable Development and Energy Sources Department, is one of the authors who contributed to the document, which provides good research practice guidelines for the accurate and actionable quantification of urban greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which is crucial as cities generate about 70% of global emissions.

The goal is to help stakeholders (governments, researchers) monitoring emissions, identifying sources, and assessing progress towards mitigation goals.

The guidelines are structured in two parts:
– the first links high-level questions – for example “Are we on track toward our emissions goals”? – to appropriate methodologies;
– the second offers 31 detailed technical chapters for best practice implementation.

The primary focus is on CO₂ and CH₄, the most significant drivers of anthropogenic climate change.
