IoT and Big Data Laboratory

The digitization of the energy system is a fundamental change made possible by a number of key technological advances. This transformation is fueled by the convergence of several technologies, including advances in communications (5G), low-cost sensing for the Internet of Things (IoT), the ability to analyze large volumes of data (Big Data), and the ability to deliver artificial intelligence-based solutions.

RSE’s IoT and Big Data Laboratory focuses on several areas: IoT, Cloud/Fog/Edge Computing, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and BlockChain 5G.

In the field of IoT, the Laboratory focuses on the development and installation of innovative sensors for distributed data collection, using both NB-IoT and LoRaWan solutions, with applications in environmental monitoring and electric mobility.

Using Cloud/Fog/Edge Computing and 5G based solutions, innovative distributed ICT architectures are designed to support the electricity sector.

In the field of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, structured and unstructured data (images/videos, documents, etc.) are analyzed, applying machine learning techniques and exploiting the synergy between Semantic Web and Big Data. In addition, it evaluates the potential of blockchain technologies in the energy domain, including their application to electric vehicle/vessel charging.

The key pillars of the IoT-Big Data laboratory are, when possible, the use and development of open-source software, rapid prototyping of cloud-oriented applications, and the use of international standards for the electricity system.
