Medium Voltage Cable Diagnostic Laboratory

The laboratory’s primary objective is to analyze the degradation phenomena that occur in the joints of the MV electricity distribution grid.

This facility is designed to simulate the typical operating conditions of an underground urban grid, with special emphasis on critical thermal conditions, such as dry soil.

In addition, there is a rain simulation facility capable of reproducing weather events of varying intensity.

The circuit allows daily current load cycles to be applied to the components, simulating energy demand from end users.

The nominal operating voltage is also applied to the components in the test loop.

A specially implemented monitoring system enables physical parameters to be recorded, such as temperature and humidity, as well as the measurement of partial discharge (PD).

Periodically, offline measurement campaigns are carried out to acquire PD and loss factor (tan δ) data on each individual cable length using different test modes.
