Power Line and Station Mechanical Testing Laboratory

In this laboratory it is possible to perform different types of tests on components of power lines and stations: conductors and related terminal equipment (traditional, HTLS high-temperature and low-sag, with composite cores), optical cables associated with overhead power lines (OPGW, ADSS, wrapped), overhead cables, insulators (composite and ceramic), electrical equipment.

Mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermal measurements can be taken from these components in order to characterize their behavior under the mechanical, electrical, thermal, and environmental stresses to which the components are subjected in service.

Specifically, the equipment that we normally use is:
• measuring instrumentation (voltage, current, resistance, temperature, size, force, displacement, optical attenuation);
• control apparatus (computerized systems, electrical control panels, actuators);
• mechanical testing machines (tension, compression, bending, torsion, vibration, fatigue, shock);
• electrical testing apparatus (transformers, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, DC generators);
• climatic chambers (temperature, humidity, reproduction of solar and UV radiation);
• service equipment (transportation/lifting equipment, machine tools, workshop equipment)

The laboratory also enables the development, implementation and characterization of prototype devices for inspection and monitoring of high voltage power lines.
