Electricity grid innovation, RSE part of European project THEUS

Departments ‘Transmission and Distribution Technologies’ and ‘Energy Systems Development’ are involved.

RSE takes part in the European project THEUS (Transmission and Distribution Hybrid Networks with Enhanced Resilience and Robustness), with a proposal funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program for 6 million euros.

The project will last 36 months and involve RSE’s Transmission and Distribution Technologies and Energy Systems Development Departments. It has the ambitious goal of developing advanced tools and innovative solutions for the integration of direct current (DC) portions in power grids at all voltage levels. Indeed, the evolution toward hybrid (AC/DC) grids is a key solution for achieving Europe’s climate-neutrality goals by 2050 and increasing the interconnection of electricity grids, while fostering system security and resilience.

THEUS is cordinated by CIRCE (Spain) and brings together a consortium of 15 partners from eight EU countries. These include research centers, technology developers, power system operators, a wind farm operator, a SME, and a European association. At the national level, RSE will collaborate with Italian partners such as ASM Terni, ABB and La Sapienza University.

THEUS will have a direct impact on the management of the future European electricity system, contribute to the development of methodologies for the evolution towards hybrid electricity grids and field validate some of the solutions developed.
