RSE at Ecomondo

Dates to save in your calendar.

At Ecomondo 2024, the event dedicated to technological innovation and environmental sustainability, scheduled from November 5 to 8 at the Rimini Fiera, RSE has organized, together with the Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee, a conference entitled ‘Sustainability and Circularity in Bioenergy Production.’

The event, taking place on November 7 from 4:30 pm to 6:15 pm at Agorà Augusto – Bioeconomy Area, Pav. D2, focuses on the importance of developing advanced solutions for renewable energy production and optimizing bioenergy production cycles. The program includes keynote speeches by industry experts, aimed at exploring fundamental topics for the future of bioenergy and its integration with circular economy models.

The conference will be chaired by Michele de Nigris, Director of the Department of Sustainable Development and Energy Sources at RSE. Franco Cotana, CEO of RSE, will provide an introductory overview of the importance of sustainability in bioenergy.

The first technical presentation by RSE will be delivered by Domenico Cipriano from the Department of Sustainable Development and Energy Sources, addressing the topic ‘Emissions from biomass: false myths and realities’, focusing on the real environmental impacts of biomass use, presenting updated data and analyses.

Francesca Bazzocchi from the Department of Energy Systems Development at RSE will reflect on ‘Decarbonization of the National Agri-food Sector,’ highlighting how biomass, through decarbonization strategies, can support the sustainability of the agri-food supply chain, reducing the carbon footprint of one of Italy’s most significant economic sectors.

Another contribution from RSE will be presented by Cristina Cavicchioli, Project Leader at the Department of Energy Systems Development, who will introduce the European DIVERSE Project. The initiative aims to integrate sustainability and biodiversity protection criteria in bioenergy production, supporting the development of low-carbon energy mixes in Alpine Space regions.

The session will be concluded by Michele de Nigris, reinforcing RSE’s perspectives in the field of sustainability and circularity of bioenergy.

On November 7, there will also be a workshop entitled ‘Determination of Biogenic Content in Hybrid Fuels for the ETS System,’ organized by Utilitalia at its stand in Pav. B7-D7, in collaboration with RSE and the Italian Thermotechnical Committee.

Following the publication of the European Commission Implementing Regulation 2023/2122/EU, as of January 1, 2024, waste incineration plants with a total thermal capacity above 20 MW will be subject to the EU ETS (Emission Trading System), initially only for monitoring, reporting, verification, and emission accreditation. This is to allow the European Commission to evaluate, by July 2026, the feasibility of fully integrating municipal waste incineration plants into the ETS system by 2028. The meeting will review the international (ISO standards) and national regulatory frameworks and provide a summary of the main methodologies developed to determine the biogenic content in hybrid fuels and waste.

Speaking on behalf of RSE, Giovanni Ciceri, Head of the General and Technical Services Unit, Quality and Environment, will provide an in-depth analysis of the current state of determining the biogenic content in hybrid fuels.
