The kick off meeting of the TwinEU European project for a resilient power grid

RSE contribution to optimizing the management, operation and monitoring of digital twins.

On January 15 and 16 RSE participated in the kickoff meeting of TwinEU, a Horizon Europe Innovation Action project that brings together a unique consortium of 76 partners from 15 countries. The strategic goal of the 36-month TwinEU is to leverage a unique set of skills from its partners, including network and market operators, technology providers and research centers, to create a pan-european digital twin concept based on the federation of digital twins, so as to enable reliable, resilient and secure infrastructure operation while facilitating new business models that will accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources in Europe.

Europe needs a resilient, cyber-secure, flexible and reliable electricity grid. The only way to meet this need is to virtualize the energy infrastructure using digital twin technology.

Within TwinEU, RSE is leading task 6.1 and is responsible for transferring and adapting TwinEU concepts from use cases (WP2) to pilots (WP6), providing a conceptual framework to optimize the management, operation and monitoring of pilot digital twins. RSE, which is already active in the study and design of digital twins as part of System Research, will bring to TwinEU its expertise to support pilots in the use digital twins for interoperability (IEC CIM 61968/61970), the management of the entire asset lifecycle (synergy Building Information Model – BIM and IEC CIM standards), and the development of innovative IT architectures based on cloud, microservices, and artificial intelligence, thanks to its experience in developing the Multy Energy Semantic Platform (MESP).

TwinEU will provide a set of tools that will be demonstrated in 8 pilots in 11 EU countries, with the goal of ensuring replicability of the developed solutions in different geographic areas and markets by testing a wide range of use cases. TwinEU will validate the developed framework and facilitate common practices among system operators, technology providers and market operators.
