The new issue of ‘APE – Appunti di Energia’ discusses the EU reform of the Electricity Market Design

In the new issue of RSE’s ‘APE – Appunti di Energia’, Federica Davò, researcher at the ‘Energy Markets Regulation’ group, talks about the reform of the European Union’s electricity market.

 

Europe is ready for electricity market reform. In June, a new directive and a new regulation were published in the EU Official Journal. The regulation will come into force on 16 July, while the directive shall be implemented by member states by 17 January 2025.

 

The overall goals are to accelerate the penetration of renewable energy and the phasing out of gas, make consumer bills less dependent on volatile fossil fuel prices, better protect consumers from future price spikes and potential market manipulations, and make the EU industry clean and more competitive.

 

The EU has had an efficient and well-integrated electricity market for over twenty years, allowing consumers to reap the economic benefits of a single energy market, ensuring security of supply and stimulating the decarbonisation process. The energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the need to rapidly adapt the electricity market to better support the green transition and offer energy consumers, both households and businesses, widespread access to renewable and non-fossil electricity at affordable prices.
