projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2015-2017/2018)

Development and management of distribution grids

The project deals with methodologies and technologies suitable for fostering the development of smart distribution grids that can manage widespread distributed generation from renewable sources, facilitate integration between energy systems and ensure users high quality service.

The project addresses aspects of distribution system management, control and quality of supply, new architectures and service models, including the application of power electronics devices, energy storage systems, information and communication technologies.

The research and development activities are complemented by experimental activities carried out in RSE’s laboratories and demonstration facilities, including a real low-voltage distribution microgrid capable of controlling different types of connected generators, loads and storage devices.

The project also addresses aspects related to the deployment of renewable sources on the territory and their integration in the distribution networks. Predictive models of the producibility of non-programmable renewable sources, based on meteorological modeling and real-time measurements, and an integrated atlas of renewable resources for the national energy system are under development. Particular attention is given to the case of small islands that are not connected to the national grid, in order to study the most appropriate solutions for gradually reducing the use of fossil fuels and increasing the use of renewable energy sources, with a view to achieving energy self-sufficiency.

Of particular interest for the development of intelligent management systems for distribution networks is the application of information and communication technologies to the electricity system. In this area, the project is developing activities related to standards to ensure the interoperability of systems and their cyber security, taking into account the growing threats associated with the use of distributed assets and sensors.

The project also carries out activities to support national and international institutions in the development of Smart Grids by participating and collaborating in a number of initiatives on this topic.
