Europe requires a resilient, cyber-secure, flexible, and reliable electrical grid. This need can only be met through the virtualization of the energy infrastructure using digital twin technology. This effort cannot be undertaken by a single operator or country but requires an unprecedented European action. This is the reason for the creation of TwinEU, a Horizon Europe Innovation Action project with a duration of 36 months, launched in January 2024. The project brings together a unique consortium with the participation of 76 partners from 15 countries.
   
TwinEU’s strategic goal is to leverage a unique set of skills from partners, including network and market operators, technology providers, and research centers, to create a Pan-European digital twin concept based on the federation of digital twins. This enables reliable, resilient, and secure infrastructure operation while facilitating new business models that accelerate the adoption of renewable energy sources in Europe.
   
TwinEU will deliver a set of tools demonstrated in 8 pilots across 11 EU countries, aiming to ensure the replicability of solutions developed in different geographical and market contexts, testing a wide range of use cases. TwinEU will validate the developed framework and facilitate common practices among system operators, technology providers, and market participants.
   
In TwinEU, RSE will lead Task 6.1, responsible for transferring and adapting TwinEU concepts from use cases (WP2) to pilots (WP6), providing a conceptual framework to optimize the management, operation, and monitoring of pilot digital twins. RSE, already active in the study and design of digital twins within the “Ricerca di Sistema”, will bring its expertise to TwinEU to support pilots in the use of digital twins for interoperability (IEC CIM 61968/6197), the management of the entire life cycle of assets (Building Information Model (BIM) and IEC CIM standards synergy), and the development of innovative distributed architectures based on cloud, microservices, and artificial intelligence. This is facilitated by the knowledge acquired during the development of the Multy Energy Semantic Platform (MESP).
