projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2022-2024)

Digitalization of the integrated energy system

The project studies the possibilities of using emerging technologies in computing, telecommunications and artificial intelligence and develops methods, tools, algorithms, demonstration platforms and experiments for the digitalization and integration of energy systems.

The digitalization of energy system management and operation processes is the main enabler for achieving an integrated energy system that is highly flexible and efficient as well as more resilient to events that can compromise energy services.

The project explores methods and tools for modeling and processing information associated with energy networks, and the territories in which they are integrated, with the aim of improving energy infrastructure planning and management processes. It develops tools for real-time analysis of historical data and data streams in order to optimize network operation and predictive maintenance, by applying big data and artificial intelligence technologies. Particular attention is given to standardization so as to facilitate interoperability among systems and foster the development of open solutions.

The project also considers the development of digital models that can reproduce the behavior of real systems in operation.

It evaluates the potential of innovative Edge/Fog and Cloud computing architectures and methods enabling dynamic ICT infrastructure management processes that can increase the resilience of the infrastructure. It applies emerging 5G communication technologies and also investigates opportunities for use in the energy sector of quantum communications . Finally, it discusses technological solutions that enable extended end-user involvement in the operation of power grids and enable the full exploitation of their flexibility.
