projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2003-2005)

High efficiency, low emission gas combined cycles

  • Verify the feasibility of flexible operation of first generation combined cycle power plants, in the context of the gradual transition from baseload to merit order plants, identifying possible critical issues and their solutions;
  • Experimentally characterize the behavior of the critical components of gas turbine machines and evaluate the real prospects for their introduction into the national generation portfolio, increasing their overall efficiency without reducing the reliability and security of the service;
  • Develop new, reliable and effective methods and instrumentation systems to assess the degradation of critical gas turbine components;
  • Determine the performance of alternative processes to reduce NOx emissions, with the aim of reducing them to levels in the order of 1 ppm;
  • Assess quantitatively the release of other gaseous pollutants (particulate matter, formaldehyde, etc.) in natural gas combustion products.
