projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2019-2021)

High-efficiency photovoltaics

This project è aims to foster the development of highly efficient and reduced-cost photovoltaic (PV) generation systems, both flat-plate and concentrating, that also help to optimize production of energy from plants installed in Italy.

This is in order to enable the achievement of the targets set for 2030 in the National Energy and Climate Integrated Plan (NECP), namely, a cumulative installed PV capacity of 50 GW (with 72 Twh of annual electricity generated), while also providing technological support for companies to participate consistently in this phase of PV technology development. To achieve this goal, the project is divided into 3 (WPs):

WP1 – Concentrating Photovoltaics
This WP aims to develop innovative concentrating solar photovoltaic (CPV) technology solutions. The research conducted by RSE will advance expertise on the entire CPV technology supply chain

WP2 – Flat-plate photovoltaics
This WP aims to develop, including experimentally, innovative technological solutions that can provide support for achieving the PNIEC targets for PV production. In particular, the analysis of the performance over time of PV systems and the related development of in-service diagnostic techniques, capable of detecting/preventing failures, will help to keep the Italian PV fleet efficient and reduce its operating cost (and thus its LCOE).

WP3 – Solar Source and Environment
This WP deals with the environmental aspects related to the implementation of PV systems, which are increasingly important for the Italian energy sector and, in addition to pursuing economic success, also aim to be environmentally sustainable.
