Increase the Synergy Among Different Energy Networks

SENERGY NETS is the ideal continuation of the H2020 MAGNITUDE project. Both projects are part of the European directives related to the decarbonisation of the energy sector.

The European Green Deal (01/2020), which outlines the path to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050, represents the reference for SENERGY NETS activities. In SENERGY NETS the integration of the electricity, gas, heat and cooling sectors in three real systems will be studied and tested: district heating and cooling of Paris Montparnasse (Dalkia, FR), district heating of Milan East (A2A Calore e Servizi, IT) and of Lubijana (ENERGETIKA, SI). These three systems belong to three areas differentiated by geographical, climatic and economic conditions, ensuring a high significance of the experiments.

SENERGY NET, leveraging the experience and results of MAGNITUDE, will support the integration of the sector in the three demonstrators in particular with regard to:

  • Operational planning of energy networks: planning tools and the simulation of multi-energy systems (MES) will be developed / adequate, for the analysis of planning with an annual horizon and planning of the operation with daily/weekly programs exploiting the flexibility made available by the individual MES for both transmission (Transmission System Operator – TSO) and distribution (Distributed System Operator – DSO) operators.
  • The evolution of the electricity markets and the development of new flexibility markets: trading tools will be developed and experimentally tested to calculate the flexibility held in the integrated system, allowing the DSO to define and request flexibility services from MES through specific tools for planning and operation, also exploiting possible local markets
  • The assessment of the benefits of integration from an overall perspective including economic, environmental and social aspects: development of a methodology to measure the creation of value resulting from the choices made and physically tested on the demonstrators. This methodology will make it possible to evaluate, based on the results of experiments, simulations, specific analyzes and on the basis of the opinion of the stakeholders involved, the actual goodness of the choices.
