Reducing Emission Modelling uncertaintY

REMY falls in a particular category of LIFE project, the Preparatory projects, specifically designed to support the development and implementation of the European Union environmental policy and legislation. In particular, REMY is part of the Environment sub-programme and aims at giving “Support for the compilation of emission inventories to improve air quality modelling”.

Objectives:

  • Provide updated, comprehensive and harmonized recommendations to support modelling groups in reducing modelling uncertainties related to emission processing.
  • Contribute to a better development, implementation and evaluation of air quality assessment, air quality plans and source apportionment in the framework of the Ambient Air Quality Directives.
  • Provide operational guidelines concerning integration and harmonization of urban/regional emission inventory, emission estimates for most uncertain sources, modelling of emission and formation processes involving primary and secondary organic particulate generation, multiscale modelling in urban and peri-urban areas including spatially varied resuspension.

To fulfil its objectives , LIFE REMY will take advantage of a set of modelling setups covering different emission strengths, meteorological contexts, spatial scales and emission reductions that will be investigated with complementary modelling tools. Particularly, models will be applied on three critical regional/urban areas EU critical areas: Po Valley and Milan (IT), Catalonia and Barcelona (E), Southern Poland and Krakow (PL).

Expected results:

  • Quantitative results on the impact of the emission uncertainty on air quality estimates
  • Uncertainty estimated on different temporal scenarios, evaluation of the sensitivity to the uncertainty in emission inventories before and after the application of project recommendations
  • Quantitative estimations of the model performance

Operational recommendations to support the compilation of emission inventories and to reduce air quality modelling and consequent air planning uncertainty
