projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2022-2024)

Resilience and Security for Energy Systems

The goal of the project is to increase the security and resilience of the energy system in the face of greater environmental threats due to climate change, through the development of tools to support institutions and operators and the definition of an optimal set of actions to be adopted for this purpose.

The ultimate goal of the project is to research innovative solutions for components, materials, and management methods aimed at strengthening the existing power grid through increased system security and resilience to cope with exceptional weather events and multiple contingencies. This is being pursued through research activities ranging from threat identification and quantification to component vulnerability study and modeling, solutions to prevent and mitigate the effects of threats on the system and the application of innovative monitoring and diagnostic technologies to detect the status of the system.

All aspects are addressed with the aim of applying the developed device and/or component, or the measurement technique in the industrial field and/or modeling systems suitable for simulating threats, vulnerabilities, and the effectiveness of active and passive mitigation measures of the electro-energy system. The activities are carried out in close collaboration with TSOs and DSOs, as well as SMEs (component and device manufacturers) participating in the work, with a focus on the implications and applicability of the solutions at industrial level.
