Development of a three-phase stand-alone merging unit prototype with advanced functionalities

To improve network reliability, you need to monitor weak points. One of the weak points is the cable joints, which are subject to breakage and can cause large losses both technically and economically.

Joint failures are generally caused by impurities added unintentionally during installation causing partial discharges (PDs). Over time, these discharges erode the insulation and cause ‘treeing’ as far as a destructive discharge between the conductor and the earth shield.
For this reason, we need a method for early detection of defects in the installation of joints and their online monitoring. A previously developed sensor was improved by adapting it for this purpose.
It is based on the measurement of the current induced on a conductor due to a change in charge. It has been experimentally tested on a real joint in which defects have been introduced artificially. The results show that the sensor can detect partial discharges. Furthermore, a method has been developed for localizing partial discharges. Early results show a consistency between the possible location of the defect and the numerical simulations.
