Education strategies and behavioral actions to mitigate Energy Poverty

Presentation of preliminary results of the ASSIST 2gether project (H2020, Grant Agreement 754051), which established the role of the Home Energy Tutor (HET).

One of the most recent challenges for the European Union is energy poverty (EP), which affects between 50 and 250 million citizens. The European Community is actively working to implement effective actions to counter it: the one with the most significant impact would be energy efficiency in the homes of vulnerable users, but it requires huge economic resources. On the other hand, a change in energy consumption behaviors would be a first step for vulnerable users toward reducing their energy consumption, and therefore their costs. With this in mind, the ASSIST 2gether project (H2020, Grant Agreement 754051) established the figure of the ‘Home Energy Tutor’ (HET), trained through an innovative course on the energy world, the social system and communication. HETs are expected to implement a series of EP mitigation actions by educating vulnerable consumers in order to increase their awareness of consumption and instill behavior change. In this article, the planning and initial results of HET training are described and analyzed, with an evaluation of the impact on vulnerable users.
