Feasibility of HVDC Connection for Offshore Wind Farms in Italy

In the study, a detailed analysis of electrical export connection has been conducted. Comparing HVAC and HVDC technologies based on cost, HVDC cables prove to be economically favorable for distances over 50 km from the coast, particularly for 1 GW offshore wind farms. Additionally, a geographical analysis identified promising areas for offshore wind projects connected via HVDC in the short and medium term.

Offshore wind energy is crucial in the decarbonisation process and significant development is expected in the next decades in Italy, especially for the floating technology. A detailed techno-economic analysis was performed and, among the aspects considered, electrical export connection has been thoroughly investigated.

The two technologies HVAC and HVDC have been considered based on their affordability: the results show an economic convenience in the use of HVDC cable over distances above 50 km from the coast, considering 1 GW offshore wind farm.

Furthermore, a geographical analysis has been carried out to identify interesting areas for offshore wind deployment connected with HVDC technology in shortand medium-term period.
